Continuing to Build for the Future

A new year brings newfound energy and optimism. I’m genuinely excited to step into the role of President for the Women’s Health Leadership TRUST. I take on this role with great joy and humility.

My grandfather lived his life in a way that was neat and orderly. He was always impeccably dressed, and their home and yard were consistently very tidy. Four years ago, after my aunt died, I found a letter my grandfather wrote to her in which he described me as a “perfect” baby. That description didn’t consider the times when my grandfather would rock me to sleep, and I would invariably leak through my cloth diaper, leaving a wet stain on his clothing. Not exactly perfect.

Over the years, the Women’s Health Leadership TRUST has spoken a great deal about leading authentically from one’s True North. We talk about it a lot because it is vitally important. When you know your values and sources of satisfaction in your life, your leadership can be authentic and bold.

Another TRUST Forum is in the books! Thank you to everyone who attended our second virtual Forum to celebrate, be inspired and recognize the power within us all. An event of this magnitude takes a lot of planning and people, and I’d like to thank the many individuals and organizations who helped make our 2021 TRUST Forum so inspiring.

It’s hard to believe fall is upon us. I feel like time has moved differently during the pandemic. Sometimes days seem to last forever. Sometimes days go by in an instant. And while nearly every day has been intense, I’ve witnessed overwhelming resilience and collaboration from my colleagues and peers throughout the health care industry. We will honor this individual and collective power at the TRUST Forum on Sept. 28 and Awards Celebration on Sept. 14.

Chances are you know a powerful woman in health care. And by powerful, I don’t necessarily mean someone who ranks in the top 10 “best of” list. I’m talking about women who are powerful because of their faith and resiliency, their ability to be innovative and resourceful, their ability to forge relationships and advance health and wellbeing.

Last month I talked about the Power of Us, the theme for this year’s TRUST Forum on September 28 and Awards Celebration on September 14. We continue to see examples in our professional and personal lives of how our collective strength is mightier than any one person. It’s why we hear the phrase “there is strength in numbers.” As individuals, we all have some healing to do as we emerge from the pandemic. But how can you be a stronger you, so you can help build a stronger us?
Women leaders join the Women’s Health Leadership TRUST to become part of a collective and dynamic force in health care. They know we can elevate the career potential of our members by providing meaningful professional development and networking opportunities. And in turn, our members help improve the TRUST through constructive feedback, including our annual member survey.
Earlier this year, we heard directly from our members and wanted to share some examples of what we learned from our member feedback.

The power to stay resilient to lead ourselves through times of fear, failure and change with confidence is within us all as we continue to address racism, injustices and inequities, as well as the pandemic.

The recent verdict finding former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty in the murder of George Floyd marked a pivotal moment for Minnesota and the country. So too did the statement, less than two weeks earlier, by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that racism is a serious threat to the public’s health.
